Ensuring safe and clean water is essential, whether you’re on a mains supply or drawing from a private source. While public water supplies are heavily regulated, there are still circumstances where independent testing is strongly advised. For private supplies, regular testing is not only good practice — it’s a legal requirement.
Public Water Supplies
Public water supplies are regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991 and overseen by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). Although water companies ensure safe supply to your property, the responsibility for internal plumbing and storage systems falls to the property owner.
Private Water Supplies
Private water supplies originate from wells, boreholes, springs, or surface water. They are regulated under the Private Water Supplies Regulations 2016, which require risk assessments every five years and annual sampling and testing.
Private supplies are vulnerable to contaminants including bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals and natural organic matter, particularly after heavy rain, droughts, or seasonal changes.
How Often Should Water Be Tested?
- Private drinking water: At least annually, or more frequently for commercial use
- Private non-potable water: Testing advised periodically
- Public mains supplies: Required if water is stored in systems posing a Legionella risk
- After repairs or unusual weather: Immediate testing recommended
