Servicing & Maintenance

Ground source heat pump servicing

Unlike standard heat pump service engineers, we cover all aspects of the installation — from the boreholes themselves through to the plant room and underfloor heating.

Complete system coverage

Most GSHP service engineers only cover the heat pump unit itself. If there's a problem with the ground loops, the boreholes or the distribution system, they can't help — and you end up coordinating between multiple contractors.

At Nicholls, our drilling and engineering background means we understand every component of your system. One team, one point of contact, from the aquifer to your radiators.

Each project has its own bespoke maintenance programme. We are also happy to survey and take on the maintenance of GSHP systems previously installed by other companies.

What most engineers cover

Heat pump unit only — annual check, refrigerant, electrical connections.

What Nicholls covers

  • Boreholes and ground loops
  • Manifolds and header pipework
  • Plant room and heat pump unit
  • Buffer vessels and controls
  • Distribution system and emitters
  • Underfloor heating zones
  • EA licence compliance (open-loop)

Servicing by system type

Closed-loop GSHP

Sealed loop systems with vertical boreholes. The most common GSHP type — we've installed and maintained over 450.

  • Ground loop pressure and flow monitoring
  • Antifreeze concentration and quality testing
  • Heat pump performance check (COP)
  • Plant room and controls inspection
  • Underfloor heating / distribution check

Open-loop GSHP

Groundwater-sourced systems with abstraction and recharge boreholes. More complex maintenance due to water chemistry.

  • Abstraction and recharge borehole inspection
  • Pump performance and flow testing
  • Water quality monitoring (scaling, iron, biological)
  • Heat exchanger inspection and cleaning
  • EA licence compliance (volumes, temperatures)
  • Remote monitoring of abstraction data

River source systems

River, canal and estuary heat sources. Seasonal variation and intake screen maintenance are key considerations.

  • Intake screen inspection and cleaning
  • Abstraction pump and pipework maintenance
  • EA licence compliance (volumes, discharge temps)
  • Seasonal performance monitoring
  • Heat exchanger fouling assessment

Data centre cooling systems

We also service large-scale open-loop GSHP and borehole cooling systems for data centres. Ongoing maintenance is critical for uptime and EA licence compliance.
