Objective
The client wanted to remove existing gas boilers and replace heating and hot water for 86 apartments with a renewable solution as part of their carbon-saving strategy.
About the project
Nicholls were approached to design, supply and install a GSHP system with boreholes for the client in Norwich. During the design phase, after completing a test borehole, it became clear that approximately 40 boreholes would be required for a closed-loop system — causing too much disruption to residents.
Having installed other open-loop systems, Nicholls used their experience to offer an alternative: a river source heat pump system, as the site was adjacent to the River Wensum running through the city.
The river source solution saved the client over £250,000 compared to the closed borehole array system and achieved approximately 75% carbon reduction.
The project required full EA licensing for river abstraction and discharge, all handled by our Nicholls Licensing & Consulting team.
