Objective

A major Central London residential development required geothermal boreholes for a ground source heat pump system, with the challenge of very limited outside space.

About the project

Nicholls were contacted to install GSHP boreholes for a high-end residential building in Central London with very little outside space. After site assessment, the only option was to drill below the building footprint from within the basement.

Access required opening up the basement during refurbishment works, with all drilling equipment lowered 12 metres down. A road closure was needed to position equipment, and a site crane was used throughout. The team installed 9 boreholes using temporary casing through running sands at depth, with probes installed to 125 metres before grouting.
