Objective

The 180-bedroom Runnymede Hotel approached Nicholls to design a sustainable heating and cooling system, taking advantage of its riverside location on the Thames.

About the project

With the hotel being located directly on the River Thames, an open-loop river source heat pump was the ideal solution — providing both heating in winter and cooling in summer from the same system.

Nicholls designed the system to meet the significant heating and cooling demands of the 180-bedroom hotel, working closely with the EA to secure the necessary abstraction and discharge licences.

The project demonstrates the scalability of river source systems for large commercial applications and the dual heating/cooling capability that makes them particularly attractive for hospitality.
